How to Get 100 Comments on Your Blog

by Adrienne Smith on January 31, 2011

in Blogging

How to Get 100 Comments on Your BlogI recently wrote a post about “How to Find Blogs to Comment On“.  The reason for that particular post was because I have found blog commenting to be not only helpful with increasing traffic to your site, but it also benefits your blog in the eyes of the search engines as well.

Once the search engines start seeing that other relevant blogs are linking to your site and the traffic is picking up, that will help get your site ranked higher in the search engines over time.

I’ve always known that blog commenting was important but I always had some type of excuse as to why I wasn’t participating.  First I didn’t have the time, then I would find blogs that had nothing to do with my niche and then the blogs that I did find were old and outdated.

With my recent participation in the Forward to Marketing training program, commenting on blogs was highly recommended.  So I decided to take some time out of my schedule and just do it.  Man, am I ever thankful that I did.  Not only did traffic start picking up on that particular blog, but I am finally seeing commenting on my posts and lots of them.  That’s what every blogger wants to see.  And it’s a darn good feeling too!

A lot of people are also having difficulty locating blogs to comment on as well.  My friend, Ryan Renfrew, recently created a challenge for other bloggers.  It’s called the “100 Blog Comment Challenge“.  Ryan asked if I would tell my readers about his challenge and perhaps you would like to participate as well.

Be sure to read his post and he will tell you all about the benefits this challenge can have for you.  Just think, if you have 100 bloggers sign up for this challenge and each of those bloggers comment on everyone’s post that they have chosen, you will end up receiving 100 comments on your post.

What I have really found great about blog commenting is that when I visit someone’s blog, I also follow the people who have commented on that particular post as well and that just leads me to even more blogs.  That’s how I met Ryan and I’m thrilled that I did.  Now I am participating in the 100 Blog Comment Challenge and had I not followed him back to his blog, I would never have had this opportunity.

So hear me when I say, if you aren’t participating in commenting on other people’s blogs, you ought to start today.  Not only will it bring more traffic to your site and that will eventually help with the search engines, but you can also start building some great relationships with other bloggers.  That can only lead to nothing but positive things for you in the future.

Good luck!  Oh, and don’t forget to leave me a comment.  :-)

If you enjoyed this post, please share it with your friends!

Adrienne – Nice summary of the benefits of blogging. However, I am skeptical that commenting on blogs helps much on search engines. Google’s Matt Cutts comment on a recent video that “commenting on do follow blogs does not pass on as much Page Rank as you would like” certainly does not clear up the controversy. Despite listening to the viideo a couple of times and re-reading his quote, I’m still not sure what it means.

Hey Randy, welcome.

I think it helps but it’s mainly a combination of a lot of different methods. I am seeing my traffic pick up from the commenting, which I’m thrilled about.

I know that commenting on do follow blogs will help with the way Google will rank you page over time, but it’s not the only thing they base that decision on, which we are all pretty aware of that. But also commenting on no follow blogs is beneficial as well because in the eyes of Google, the traffic looks much more organic. But I have also found that when I find a blog worth commenting on, I just go for it and I don’t really care at the time whether it will benefit me or not. When I read good stuff, I want to let the blog owner know. Simple as that.

Thanks so much for your comment and for stopping by my blog. It’s always appreciated.

Best to you,

Adrienne

I totally agree with you Adrienne. Commenting on blogpost give you the opportunity to meet a lot of other bloggers in a great way. Blogs you never would have found by searching on Google. That was also in a blog comment I found your blog :-)

Hi Adrienne,

Commenting on high PR blogs doesn’t do a thing for your own PR. To get the benefits of a high PR backlink, they must link to you from within an article, or you must write an article for them and include a bio box link.

But commenting on ComLuv blogs will bring you traffic. If Google sees you getting a goodly amount of traffic from a variety of sources, they will trust you and reward your blog by sending you more traffic. You may not get to the top spot on the SERP, but they will send you a nice amount of the crumbs :-)

Hey Rick,

Thanks for confirming that for me. I have heard so many different things from different people that my mind starts to overload at times. LOL!!! I think that’s why I haven’t really paid that much attention to the PR ranking for whatever blog I’m on. For one thing, this blog is moving up in the PR rankings but my other blog is brand new, only 2 months old. But it’s getting a lot of traffic due to my efforts of course and have already been approached by some people to do guest blogging. So the end result is still the same as far as I can see.

I love the ComLuv plug-in and I definitely have followed people all over the place just from those links. Wonderful invention if I say so myself. That’s how I found you by the way. And am glad that I did.

Appreciate you stopping by and your comment is greatly appreciated.

Hi Adrienne,

Nice post! I totally agree with you that blog commenting on other blogs can lead to more traffic and comments to your own blog. It also can build some beneficial relationships.

Since I’ve started this strategy my blog traffic has picked up and I have many more comments on my blog. I started this in December and the before and after comment numbers is like night and day. Also as a result of this strategy, I’ve done an interview and 2 guest posts. Plus I did a product review post that was very well received and made me more affiliate sales than I’d ever had previously.

One thing I’ve had to be careful with is spending too much of my time reading other blogs and commenting. I try to allocate a set amount of time for it and then get on with other things, because in the end, I still have ebooks to write and other websites to tend.

Thanks, Adrienne, and good luck with it!

Hi Peggy,

I can definitely relate to you. I have another blog that I just started at the end of November. I just started implementing blog commenting about 3 weeks ago now and I can’t tell you how much traffic has picked up since then. Just like you, I was just approached to do be a guest blogger so I can see where this can all lead. I’m just so thrilled that I caught on to this now instead of having dismissed it throughout this entire year.

I have had to rework my entire schedule to make sure that I do have the time to comment on other blogs. In the first week I found myself taking so much time just reading the posts and writing my comments. I like to absorb everything I read so I wasn’t the speediest thing. I’m easing into it now though so I think I’ve got more things kind of figured out. It can be very time consuming that’s for sure but well worth every second.

Thank you SO much for stopping by and your comment is greatly appreciated. I love your blog and you have so many wonderful posts. Just finding the time to go through them all. :-)

Thanks Peggy and have a wonderful day!

Hi Adrienne,

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. Yes, blog comment is a great and free way to get your name out there and make new connections.

The only thing is that I find it can be creat information overload when I try to comment a lot. I try to read before I comment.

Hey Ben,

Great to see you again… I will definitely agree that it can go into information overload. There is so much good information and I do take the time to read all the posts. Which is why I was getting WAY behind in my other stuff. Just got involved and lost track. But, think I’ve got a better handle on it all now. Thanks for sharing your views, it’s always appreciated.

Have an awesome day and thanks again,

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve heard lots about commenting and even teach it to clients; however, just like you, I’ve made lots of excuses on why I don’t have time to actively to this myself for my own websites.

I’m going to put this challenge to the test and monitor my progress.

Thanks again for the reminder!

Hey Nate,

Thanks for stopping by and I’m so thrilled that you are in on this. I have found that as I have made the time for it, it’s definitely been worth it. Sure, I might not have made a lot of sales from these particular visitors, but I sure have enjoyed the interaction and the learning experiences I have received. I have come across some amazing bloggers and I’m so thrilled that I did finally take the time. I believe that it will benefit me down the road as someone who people feel has something to share with the community. In the end, isn’t that what’s important!

Cheers Nate and can’t wait to hear how things go for you as well.

Hey Adrienne,

Came over to continue the conversation from YOUR blog comment – and the power speaks for itself :) (love seeing it in action)

Great post, and intersting too because not too long ago there was a 100 comments challenge – that ironically I poked fun at and ended up with 180 plus comments on the post LOL!
It an work, but be warned, the challenge can leave people commenting for comments sake – and that is just SPAM!

Great points all round though, and I totally agree – I would be nothing had I not commented everywhere when i started

Well thanks for stopping by! Awesome and so glad you’re here.

That is just too darn funny about your recent challenge. I love that, so happy to hear it turned out much better than you expected. I love surprises…

Yeah, I was thinking about people commenting just to comment, but I would hope that I could tell the difference since I do approve all comments. I just like to think positively about the outcome and go with it. So far, so good! :-)

Am still going to get to those Web 2.0 sites so I haven’t forgotten.

One thing I’ve found with blog comments is that not only does it do the things you mention – create traffic, build relationships etc – but if you actually read the posts you are commenting on you’ll find that blog commenting is very fertile ground for generating ideas for posts and articles.

I’m ‘in’ on Ryan’s challenge – but I haven’t yet written the post I want to be commented upon! When I do, I’ll see you there.

Hi Adrienne,
I agree with you that commenting on blogs will make a difference in your ratings over time – not to mention build some really cool friendships online that could lead to partnering on products, guest blog posts, interviews – who knows?!

I say this with one caveat: you have to be REAL! I just started my blog a couple of months ago and I am already getting deluged with junky spam comments – yuck! What is the point in that? That’s not building a relationship, that’s screaming “me, me, ME!” The ME generation is over – the world doesn’t work that way anymore!

Hey Kelly,

We ALL get spammy comments unfortunately because there will always be those people who are only out for themselves and no one else. Wish it wasn’t that way! But the good thing about it is that you don’t have to approve them and they can go to your spam folder.

Have fun commenting…

Thanks Adrienne for guiding to the 100 blog comments challenge. I have signed up for that and hope to see 100 comments on my blog and will in the process find 100 new blogs to read and interact with.

I am also doing a study now to find if blog commenting does really help in terms of traffic? The reason is that so far my experience on that front has been mixed. There have been blogs from where I have received a whole lot of new readers and others from where not even one! However I guess that in the longer term it will be beneficial. And in the shorter term the biggest benefit is that you actually get to read some good articles which do teach you something and that is better than instant traffic!

I can guarantee that blog commenting will bring a lot more traffic to your blog. It might not necessary bring you sales, but eventually it will help. Because it will help your blog look more important in the eyes of the search engines, more people will be attracted to what you have to offer which will lead to more sales. But, it’s also important to visit those blogs where the people also think like we do and want to return the favor. There are some blogs I visit and they never visit my blog. So after awhile, I stop visiting them.

Good luck with that and can’t wait to hear the results you have found.

See you soon,

Adrienne

Great advice, Adrienne. It is a nice reminder of something we should all be doing on a daily basis to drive traffic back to our sites. The real benefit is in the relationships that can be built in commenting on other people’s blogs. While it is easy to get lost in time going from site to site, I like what you told me today on the phone, and that is to set a timer and limit yourself to an hour (or whatever time frame you specify), and getting all your blog commenting done at that time. By the way, I really enjoyed talking with you on the phone today. It is easy to see why you draw success to you. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your comment and I really enjoyed our conversation this morning as well. I can see why Dave said we had so much in common.

You will find that by visiting other people’s blogs and leaving them comments that you will not only start driving more traffic to your blog, but you will learn a lot from them as well as build up some great relationships. It has made all the difference in the world to my business.

I appreciate your kind words Sarah and am looking forward to continuing our relationship as well. You will go very far in this industry and I’m honored to know you now! Here is to your success!

I was reading the various titles in your archives (great titles by the way) and chose this post to read because I noticed something you did increased the number of comments you received from this point forward.

I’ve struggled with comments, and had all but given up since I found many were being sent to the spam folder despite being legitimate comments. I got tired of taking the time to write, only to be faced with a white screen.

I’ve since started back up, and notice that most bloggers who use commentluv don’t have this issue. On a side note, I switched from Disqus to Commentluv last week and noticed two things right away.
1. My website load time cut down about 35-40% which I was thrilled with.
2. I started getting more comments! :)

I’ve been slowly working on those titles my friend. Always a work in progress.

My blog had pathetic traffic until the beginning of this year. That’s when I started visiting other blogs and leaving comments. I also started building more relationships and learning lots of great things from my fellow bloggers.

I see you have the “Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin”. After I installed that one my spam almost completely stopped. Did you have that one installed all along?

I love CommentLuv… I have found a lot of blogs through this little plug-in. It’s a must have in my book.

Did you read my post “How to Get More Comments on Your Blog“? You may find that one helpful as well. Also, be sure you are also sharing your content on Twitter.

You ever need any help, give me a shout. I’d be happy to offer you any suggestions on how you can get your blog noticed more.

Thanks again Warren and thanks for the connection on Facebook. Looking forward to getting to know you better.

No, the GASP plugin came when I switched over to commentluv. Other than the manual “Great post” comments I haven’t seen any automated span since installing it. I’m happy with both so far though for sure!

I’ll head over and read it now! :)

And likewise! It’s great connecting with you.

Those two are a winning combinations for sure. That’s great news. I had just Akismet before but like you, found a lot of the good posts in spam too. That just didn’t work for me.

Whenever I learn new things, I share them through posts. If you have any questions, go to the contact form and send me an email. I’ll get back with you and answer any questions you may have. Thanks Warren, I appreciate that.

I’m going through a program right now where I hope to FINALLY decide how I want to brand myself. I’ve been online for four years now but never really knew where I belonged. I do both network and affiliate marketing and I do work from home full-time. This year alone I’ve really made some turning points but really needed this program to give me the direction to figure out just exactly where I belong as far as what I enjoy doing the most through my blog. Until then, I continue to write about what I learn and help others along the way. I’ve got a great community built up here that I’m extremely proud of.

I would love to share the love but you have to also find something you enjoy blogging about. See, you can turn around and just share with others what you are learning through visiting all these other blogs. Even though your passion is real estate I’m sure, there’s no harm in making some extra cash on the side. You never know, you just might enjoy doing this more! :-)

How cool! I found this link on the related articles section of one of your articles. I doubt the contest still going on, but I’ve got to say, blog commenting is very important.

I’ve got probably as many as 60 comments max on my stuff so far, but it is getting higher and higher. And much of that is due to blog commenting.

Also, a great sign they are growing your traffic is when your top five commented posts are all ones that you’ve released within the past month, lol.

Hooray for great tips, Adrienne!

By the way, what’s the most comments you’ve ever received?

Yeah, this particular contest didn’t go off as well as we had hoped. If you visited the post, Ryan only got 28 people on the list but he also fell off the face of the earth the very next month. He just stopped blogging for some reason. I’m sure life got in the way as it’s been known to do. What good did come from this though was all the people it put me in contact with. I was just getting started with blog commenting at that time.

Your blog is becoming more popular Fred because more people are seeing it and being referred to your posts. That’s the fabulous thing about other bloggers sharing your content. I love that your top five commented posts are recent ones too. Isn’t that the best?

My top comments so far are around 190 but half of those are my replies too. I always reply to every single comment so 95 of them are mine. :-) Still, it’s a great number. Can’t wait to top 200.
