How to Create Your Unique URL for Your Facebook Fan Page

by Adrienne Smith on February 28, 2011

in Facebook

So you all probably know by now that I FINALLY created my Facebook Fan Page.  Yeah me!!!  But, I soon recognized another annoying little problem.  When I went to promote my Fan Page I had to deal with that L-O-N-G URL…

Sure I could head over to one of my favorite sites, Bit.ly, and shorten it but every once in a while there will be a break in their links.  Not quite sure why but I just didn’t want to run into that problem.  So, I went in search of a solution.

I found some information online that solved my problem so I wanted to share this same information with you in this video.  Watch how you can shorten your URL for your Fan Page and make it unique.

Hope you enjoy the video…

If you enjoyed this post, please share it with your friends!

Adrienne, I also use Bitly to shorten and track my links. Your video was very timely and useful, thanks! We are mutual friends/fans with quite a few people on FB. Wondering which FB Fan page builder system you are using or considering using? 10,000 Fans v. FB Fan Engine vs. Brand X?

Hey Neil,

Bitly is an awesome service, wouldn’t you agree? I use it a LOT!!! Glad to hear that my video came at the right time.

Well, I am involved in a training community right now and they have provided the script for my Fan Page. Unfortunately, I’m having some issues with it at the moment. Hey, sometimes things don’t always go as smoothly as we had hoped… But am working out the kinks. So, I’m not really familiar with the other fan page builder systems. But, if you have a preference please let me know. Want to be able to recommend a good one to my readers.

Thanks for stopping by and for commenting. Always great to see new faces.

Hi Adrianne
Nice little tip there. I have never really been a big fan of Facebook (don’t really know why), but I might have to make a fan page at some time. It just is a little too big to ignore I guess.

Hey Thomas,

I’m sure you are aware that Facebook now has more visitors than Google so with the Fan Pages, you can promote whatever business you want and people will “Like” your page because they are interested in what you have to offer. It’s something to consider, that’s for sure.

Thanks for your comment,

Adrienne, your tutorial is very nicely done. :-) Great job on setting up your facebook page as well! I’m very sure you’re going to have a wonderful experience with the page. However, I was unable to visit your page as your page link brought me back to the login page. Just wondering, did you set country/age restriction for your page? (if your page has no restricted content etc maybe you can set it to public viewing so everyone from anywhere can view your page, just a suggestion :)

Hi Ching,

Thank you for your comment, I appreciate that.

Thanks for letting me know about the page bringing you back to the login page. See, I would have never known this had you not told me. I did not set any restrictions but will be sure to check that out. Sorry you are having problems.

Thank you again for all your positive feedback.

Hi Adrienne, now that I’m on reading week I finally made it over to your blog! Yay!

And I love it! I wish I had found this tutorial video when I was setting up my FB pages. I had no idea how to change the URL! You page looks FANTASTIC, I love what you did with the layout.

And did you know that you can’t change the name of your page once you hit 100 fans? I didn’t know this, but I saw someone tweet about it! Interesting!

Great info, thanks Adrienne. :)

Hey Elisa, so happy to see you here!!!

Thank you for that, I appreciate it! When I started setting up my Fan Page and having to share my link I was going nuts. I knew there had to be a way to change that so being the determined woman that I am, I hunted down the answer. AND, I do love sharing what I learn with my readers. I also enjoy learning by someone showing me exactly what to do so the video was the logical way to accomplish this task…

Thanks for the kudos on the page. Having having some problems with the initial set up but am trying to work it all out.

I did not know that, thanks for sharing. So, I guess I better be happy with my name now right or get to changing it fast. I’m up to 40 fans now! Yay!!!

Have an awesome day and thanks for stopping by!

I didn’t know it was 100. I changed it when it was 25 fans. It is so frustrating to get those first fans. I remember asking all my friends to like the first page I ever made. It was so funny.

The worst thing is that with the new changes it looks harder to engage people if they were not active on your page to start with.

I love custom URLs on pages cause you can name it anything you want. The bad thing is that someone can actually take your URL, for example I could take URL AdrienneSmith for any page and you would have to think of something else.

Anyway, I was just trying to say – great post :)

I think what Elise was saying is that after 100 fans you can’t change the URL if you want. At this time, I have no intention of changing this one. Watch me change my mind right when I get 101 fans. LOL!!!

I guess that’s the only reason I’ve put off creating my Fan Page up to now Brankica… I haven’t found many Fan Pages that I’m dying to be a part of so what would make people want to join mine? But, they are so I’m not going to complain…

Thanks for the comment, it’s always appreciated.

Once you set the URL you can never change it. It’s set in in stone. You can however change the Name of the page up to 100 likes. If you were at 101 and really wanted to change the Name, you could in fact kick one person out (possibly explain it to a friend or a few if more are needed and ask them to re-like when you are done) and then change the name when you are under 100 again.

I did find that out earlier this week. Luckily for me, I have no intention of changing the name for this p[articular Fan Page. But it’s great to know for future reference.

Hi Adrienne:

Cool video tutorial. While watching it, it was one of those “duh” moments since I do that kind of thing all the time but had never applied it to Facebook.

Thanks again,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Glad you enjoyed the video… Yep, I was a little slow in getting my Fan Page up as well so don’t feel left out! It’s a great way to socialize about your business. You ought to give it a go!

Nice blog. I have found (from experience) that the best way to increase traffic to your website is through facebook advertising.

Thank you for your comment… Facebook advertising is a great way to get targeted traffic but like adwords, it’s never guaranteed sales. But, I do prefer it over adwords any day. If people haven’t tried it they should.

Thanks for the comment.

Another great tip for shortening your Facebook URL is, you can now shorten facebook to fb in your links. So for our page http://www.facebook.com/fb.profile.banner can also be shared as http://fb.com/fb.profile.banner or http://www.fb/fb.profile.banner

I remember that just need to reach about 25 fans and then visit to facebook.com/username. You are now able to setup the unique and short url for your fanpage.
