How I Killed My Spam!

How I Killed My Spam!So I was leaving a comment on a blog the other day and really put some serious thought into this.  I hit the submit button and my post never showed up.  Didn’t even see the comment with the tag line “Your Comment Is Awaiting Moderation”.

It was just gone, bye bye…  Darn!

From what I understand, some of those problems are due to the Akismet plug-in.  I haven’t had any complaints so far but I do still have a few problems with spam.  I mean, the majority are caught but from time to time I’ve skimmed over a few and found some of my regular commenters in the spam folder.  That didn’t make me happy.

Have also had a few slip through to my main comments waiting approval but as we all know by now, they are pretty easy to catch.

If you’ve read some of my previous posts you learned that I started commenting on other blogs recently.  I started to notice that there were quite a few of them that had a plug-in that made me check a box to say that I am not a spammer.  I liked that so I asked one of the blog owners what the name of that plug-in was.

It’s called the “Growmap Anti Spambot plug-in“.  You can find it by clicking on the “Add New” Plug-ins and type in this name or click on the above link and you will be taken directly to the download page.

As you will notice when you scroll down to the bottom of my page to leave a comment you will have to click the box before you can hit submit so that I will know you are a real live human being.  If you don’t check the box, you don’t go through.

That’s the reason I have gone from literally hundreds of spam a day to none.  I was truly amazed!!!  Glory be, I’m saved!!!!

Grab the plug-in and it will do wonders for cutting down on spam.  The people who leave comments won’t mind since they know that you will visit their blog in return and comment on theirs.  That’s what the community of bloggers is all about isn’t it!

Have a great day everyone!

I have read a lot of good things about G.A.S.P. and we know that Gail is great at sharing/getting involved with free tools that benefit everyone (keywordluv, commentluv) so I am not surprised at all.

Personally I use Cookies for Comments, which is working great on my blog, but if spammers find a way around it, I will definitely take G.A.S.P. out for a spin.

Thanks Leo, I totally agree. Just one to keep in mind maybe down the road but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that won’t be the case for you.

Appreciate you stopping by.

Adrienne,

Now that is a plugin I could use.

Because the spammers have gotten smarter Akismet has been set to pick them up. The problem is, it picking up some of my regular commentors. I do have to check my spam box every day.

Hey Sheila,

That’s the problem I started having too. I had 100′s of spam comments every single day and to have to go through those just to be sure my regular commenter’s weren’t in there because a royal pain. I’m happy to say that this plug-in has REALLY helped me. It’s so nice to open my comments and have no more spam.

Enjoy!

Hi Adrienne, first of all thank you so much for visiting my blog earlier. :-) It’s a pleasure to meet you. I have started using Gail’s Anti-spam plugin since last week and so far I’m absolutely satisfied with the result. The spams are greatly reduced and the checkbox really saved me a lot of time trying to dig out real, sincere comments among the spams. I’m thinking about stopping Akismet if this plugin continues to do well.

Again, thanks so much for dropping by. Hope to see you again sometimes.

Hi Ching, thanks for stopping by. I love finding new blogs and I so enjoy reading what others are doing.

I just love this plug-in and am still so thrilled how well it works. Still am not getting any spam at all and that is a great feeling.

Appreciate your comment and I’ll be back to your blog to visit again soon.

Exactly the same thing happens to me, I spend a lot of time on the comments I leave, I don’t want people to think I am spamming, but sometimes they just don’t show up at all, that’s very frustrating.

It might be because some of the blogs you are commenting on have nothing to do with what you are promoting, therefore, in their eyes your comment is spam. People that do that are just looking for sites to link with. Be sure to try and locate more blogs that are in your niche and comment on those. That might help.

You would think a spam bot would be able to check a box. I’m really glad they don’t though a lot of those captcha codes and other anti-spam methods are obnoxious.

I’m glad they don’t either Dave but trust me, I’m sure they will find a way around that soon too. Darn them…

A lot of spammers usually use blogs with WordPress-powered sites as targets for their unsolicited messages. I definitely do not want to use the website that I worked hard on to give these spammers free publicity. And I do not want either my regular visitors to be tagged as spam. Thanks for this Adrienne. This is definitely useful information for me. Deleting spam comments manually can be a daunting task.

You are so very welcome Bob and glad you found this helpful. Manually having to go through them is not fun so I love it when there is a plug-in that will really help with this process. I’ve found this one to be great for that.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your day!
