So glad to have you back. If you have missed any of my most recent posts, be sure to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Social media is STILL going strong.

A recent report was released on February 1st that showed the most trafficked websites in the world. Guess who was #1? YouTube… Guess who was #2? Facebook… Twitter is following behind in the #12 spot but I’m sure it won’t be long before it catches up. So what does that tell you? Social media rocks…

Here are just a few statistics you might be interested in learning about Facebook.

  • There are more than 350 million users
  • In any given day, 50% of active users log on to Facebook
  • More than 35 million users update their status every single day
  • More than 55 million status updates are posted each day
  • More than 2.5 billion photos are uploaded to the site each month
  • More than 3.5 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) are shared each week
  • More than 3.5 million events are created each month
  • There are more than 1.6 million active Pages on Facebook
  • More than 700,000 local businesses have active Pages on Facebook
  • Pages have created more than 5.3 billion fans

Hey, don’t take my word for it though. You can review these stats yourself plus many more at:

One of the most important things to learn from social media sites are that you must follow the rules or you will get canned and create a very bad name for yourself. Okay, so many of these so called rules are unwritten but a lot of it is just good common sense. They are called “Social Media” sites for a reason. Too many people abuse these sites, therefore, breaking the “rules” of the game.

Why is this important? Because if you can master the art of social media, there is huge potential for both you and your business. You definitely DO NOT want to blow this.

Please forgive me because I’m not necessarily pointing the finger at you in particular. But, there is a point to all of this. There are SO MANY people on Facebook that simply DO NOT know what they are doing. I’m sure you know the ones..

Here are just a few of my DO’S and DO NOTs, and of course, I would LOVE to hear your comments on this subject especially if you feel I have left anything out:

Here are a few of the DO’s:

  • Do use your real name when you set up your profile. (Not your company, fake names or logos.)
  • Do use a current photo of YOU.( Not your dog, your favorite car or your high school photo.)
  • Do upload plenty of photos into your account. This is the place to put those pictures of your dog, your favorite car or your high school photo.
  • Do only tag people that are associated with your posts or are in your videos (unless they have given you permission to do so).
  • Do share with your new friends who you are and be truthful. You don’t have to share all your private information, but do be honest if you intend to connect with people.
  • Do interact with people. It’s the reason you are here. Pop in and say Hi, make friends and get to know them.
  • Do share with your friends if you “like” something they posted and be sure to “comment” on their posts, notes and videos. This is how you interact with your friends because your opinion means a lot to them. People will do the same for you. Just don’t go overboard… Be sincere.
  • Do connect with people who have the same interests as you. Always be polite and sincere with your friendships.

Here are a few of the DO NOT’s:

  • Do not spam people’s walls. Promoting yourself on your friends wall is a big huge no no. This is the quickest way to get deleted from someone’s friends list.

  • Do not tag people that are not related to your posts, notes or videos. Very very very bad manners.

  • If you are specifically on Facebook to promote you and your business, playing games is a huge waste of time.
  • Do not spend your entire day on Facebook. Sure, you want to spend enough time and build relationships but don’t let time get away from you because you do have a business to run.
  • Do not send someone a friend request without writing them a personal note.  Take the time to write them a few lines.  Maybe you want to connect with them because you have visited their blog or been on one of their training calls.  Let them know why you want to connect.
  • Do not send too many personal messages. Facebook sees this as spam and will shut you down. People usually blast out their opportunity to a lot of people which is again, totally inappropriate behavior.

I do hope this post is helpful for a lot of you that really love Facebook. Social Media is powerful if you do it right. So, follow the rules, build some relationships and you will soon be the king or queen of social media.

Okay guys, go have fun and meet you some new friends….
